In this edition we have one of our 2016 Fellows, architectural choreographer Laura Kriefman telling us about the interactive crane installations that she does, her travels around Asia to spread this unique concept and the cool connections she has made with other INK Fellows around the world!
Q.As one of the recently inducted INK Fellows, tell us a little bit of your experience at the INK Conference this year in Goa.
I was blown away by the INK Conference in Goa! There were so many extraordinary speakers, such insight into the country and such a wonderful atmosphere. I was really impressed by how open and interesting both the fellows and the delegates were. It made me realize that the best thing I could do, as an INK Fellow, was invest in all these relationships, come back to India, find out more, and create work with these extraordinary people.
Q. You’ve just finished a stint of travel across Asia, visiting Hong Kong and Singapore. Tell us about the exciting projects coming your way.
Well, I’ve been following up conversations for making more citywide interactive installations- some with cranes, some with other moving objects – I’d tell you more but I’m sworn to secrecy! I’ve also been doing pop up performances of my new interactive dance show: trying it out in front of new audiences and finding out what people like about it too.
Q. Any collaborative efforts between you and any other INK Fellows in the works? Any special mentions?
I had a great weekend working with Suranga Nanayakkara in Singapore. We’re planning something with his brilliant AHLab, at Singapore University of Technology and Design. He’s got a great team there and I’m really excited to see what we all come up with together.
I’m doing a workshop tonight (19th Dec) with Abhijit and the Dharavi Rockers (and interactive tap dance!) and I’m also going to be trekking to Everest Base Camp with the inspiring Krushnaa Patil!
Q.What is on the drawing board for the 2017?
Hopefully more Augmented Dance work here in India, fusing Indian music and movement with all our interactive work and touring here. I’m finalizing a couple more mass crane dance style events, and I’ve got a new interactive installation exploring slow motion dance footage that will go public in three or four months. So it’s going to be another exciting year of ground breaking work. And of course, trekking to Everest Base Camp and trying to fit in some sailing!
