The Maya Musical by Teach for India

As a young woman at the outset of her career, Sanaya Bharucha rejected enviable corporate job offers and declined to pursue a master’s degree. Instead, she joined Teach for India, a nationwide movement to serve under-resourced communities. What is possible for low-income children with no previous exposure to the arts? To answer this question, Sanaya and her colleagues staged the “Maya Musical”, a production created in partnership with Broadway-based artists and starring the students themselves. In this persuasive talk, Sanaya narrates her experiences and presents the musical as a symbol of the kind of education every child deserves

Sanaya Bharucha leads special projects and outreach at Teach for India, a nationwide movement of young professionals who commit two years to teaching in under-resourced communities. In this capacity she directed the Maya Musical, a partnership with Broadway-based artists. The production served a demonstration of what’s possible for low-income students with no previous exposure to the arts. Through this and other projects, Sanaya promotes integrated education which combines exposure and access, values and mindsets, and academic achievement.
